Project Name:
Psychosocial and psychological support for children and adolescents in Palestinian camps in Lebanon
Start Date:2007-12-15
End Date:2009-12-31
Description:
HI has been implementing psychosocial projects and providing psychological care since 2004 throughout Lebanon. Multi-faceted issues ranging from displacement from their homeland and living in exile, to poor living conditions in the camps, deprivation of rights and ongoing political conflicts leave Palestinian children and youth at a very high risk of developing emotional, academic, psychosocial or behavioural problems. These problems, if not taken care of at an early stage, will most probably result in more serious mental health issues in the future.
Activities:
Handicap International has developed a layered system of complementary supports that meets the needs of different groups. This multi-layered support system is based on:
1- The provision of individual psychological care for children facing psychological difficulties. These children are identified through a referral system between NGOs’ social workers, UNRWA staff and care centres staff. This system is functional in the North, and has been developed in Beirut and in the South during the year 2008.
2- The enhancement of technical and psychosocial capacities of childhood professionals. This is done through a support for our partners Najdeh and General Union of Palestinian Women, which receive children facing psychosocial difficulties in 6 care centers within Lebanon. Also, guidance and training sessions are provided to UNRWA teachers counsellors, UNRWA Health centres and NGOs’ social workers so as to enhance their capacity to cope with children facing psychological difficulties.
3- The improvement of the psychosocial environment of children living in camps, through the implementation of a number of games and extra-scholar activities enhancing children’s personal expression; and the adaptation of these activities based on each child’s specific needs. These activities take place in the 6 care centers and in UNRWA schools.
4- An awareness raising of Palestinian communities through yearly campaigns implemented within 5 camps, and through diverse Palestinian actors. In 2008, the topic chosen for the campaign is “violence”.
Objectives:
The main goal of the project is to promote psychological well being for Palestinian refugee community in Lebanon through psychological care and psychosocial activities for youth.
The project will support partners in order to achieve the objective in a long term sustainable view.
